Core Exercise for Understanding of Personality (Section 6)

 

Personality Trait Discussion (15-20 minutes)

How this helps:  Understanding each other’s personality traits can prevent misunderstandings and encourage compassion.

The exercise:
1. Spend 15-20 minutes discussing one personality trait you appreciate about your partner and one that sometimes challenges you.
2. The other partner listens and reflects back what they heard.
3. Switch roles and repeat.

Practice frequency:
Do this once a week to foster better understanding of each other’s traits.

 

Optional Supplemental Exercises (For Variety or Additional Support)

 

1. Strengths and Challenges (15 minutes)

How this helps:  This exercise helps you identify and appreciate the strengths of your partner’s personality while also recognizing areas of growth.

The exercise:
1. Each partner writes down two strengths they see in the other person’s personality and one challenge.
2. Spend 15 minutes discussing these strengths and challenges without judgment.

 

2. Personality Compatibility Discussion (15 minutes)

How this helps:  Personality differences can either complement or challenge a relationship. This exercise helps couples explore how their personalities complement each other.

The exercise:
1. Spend 15 minutes discussing how your personalities complement one another in everyday life.
2. Then, discuss any areas where your personalities sometimes clash or cause tension.
